Learning German in the United States
MetadataShow full item record
Unlike in Germany, where the English language is seen and heard everywhere and the benefits of speaking the language are immediate and obvious, few Americans have any urgent need to learn German, unless they plan to travel to Germany in the future or work with an international firm. For this reason, I became curious about what other motivations students in the United States could have to learn German. I also wanted to know if there are any places in the country where German is more commonly taught, and if any trends in enrollments across different levels and ages could indicate other reasons why people are choosing to learn the language. I hoped that through gaining an understanding of German studies and the motivations of students in the United States, possible information could be gathered to help develop, maintain, and build German programs in the future.
