The complete title of the work, Vorstadt Krokodile Eine Geschicte vom Aufpassen, might have an English equivalent of: The Crocodile Club A Story of Awareness. The word Aufpassen conveys a sense of being careful, attentive, or alert in addition to awareness. The author illustrated this type of awareness by three groups of people in the story. One group was children, a second was senior citizens and the third was a ring of thieves. The children in the story include the nine members of the Crocodile Club and six Italian children. The Crocodiles are unpopular with the surrounding community as the story begins because they annoy people. The Italians, children of immigrants, are also unpopular. The Crocodiles harass the Italians at the beginning of the story, due mostly to prejudicial ideas which the Crocodiles have learned from their parents.
