Abstract
Emilio Carballido is the leading playwright in
contemporary Mexico. He has written full-length plays,
one-acts, screen plays, operas, ballets, novels and
short stories, all or which are categorized and reviewed
in Mrs. Margaret Peden's doctoral thesis "Emilio Carballido:
Dramatic Author, His Work from 1948-1966." The
intent of the following paper is not to survey the bulk
of Carballido's work, but rather to trace a dominant
theme, individuality, through the course of his career.
hoping at the same time to suggest the nature of his style
and point out major characteristics of his work. I have
also dealt to some extent with the quality and definition
of reality in the work or Carballido since this is intricately
related to the main theme. (Every individual
exists within and determines his own reality.) I have
chosen the following representative works upon which to
focus: Rosalba y Llaveros, La hebra de oro, El dia
que se soltaron los leones, El relojero de Cordoba, Las
estatuas de marfil, and "Delicioso domingo." More complete
plot summaries or all but the last play can be
found in Mrs. Peden's work.
