A Selected Study of Methods and Materials for Teaching English as a Second Language

This study of methods and materials for the teaching of English as a second language to speakers of other languages, particularly Spanish, was prompted by the 'Puerta de Oportunidad' project at Kalamazoo College. The project, under the direction of Dr. Betty Lance, was founded to teach English to Spanish speaking people in the Kalamazoo area. The teachers for the project are senior Spanish majors at Kalamazoo College, thus having little or no experience or training in the teaching of English. This study therefore was initiated to help these teachers as well as myself gain an insight into the teaching of English as a second language. Through research I discovered that visual aids were an important feature of teaching English and thus devoted part of this project to discussing their use and developing some visual materials. I also spent some time observing the teaching of English at the English Language Institute at Ann Arbor and at a Pontiac elementary school to get a better idea of teaching methods used by different people to teach English. As a final exercise I devoted some time to researching textbooks for possible future use in the Puerta de Oportunidad project.
