Abstract
This work is designed to serve as a testing guide for teachers
in programs of English as a Second Language for adult learners. Preparation
of the main body or this text primarily involved compilation
and editing of works written by experts in the testing field. These
expert opinions and findings have been tempered by my personal classroom
observations and by an awareness of the practical realities present in
adult ESL programs. Tests are vital to the classroom educational proeessa They tell
teachers and students how well they have taught and learned; they point
out "weak spots" or faulty learnings that must be reviewed, and they
serve to reinforce the subject matter being taught. This last testing
purpose, "reinforcement," is of special interest to teachers of English
as a second language for adults.
The unique teaching and learning situation in adult ESL classes
makes immediate reinforcement essential to daily student learning.
Since most adults are preoccupied with the concerns of jobs and homes;
ESL teachers can't expect their students to complete detailed homework
assignments: they can't rely on out of class assignments that, in other
teaching situations, help to review and reinforce material covered in
class. Class time must be reserved for the purposes or practice, review,
and reinforcement.
