Abstract
Georges Dumezil and Mircea Eliade, who come from close cultural contexts, offer very different perspectives within their study of comparative mythology. The chaos and destruction of the first World War, which completely disrupted the social orders of many nations in Europe, fueled a more functionalist perspective. The social disruption suffered could only be altered by the cohesion and consensus of the societies in Europe. Perhaps in a unconscious effort to draw attention to the need for unity, the Indo-European philology and culture became a popular area of study. Unfortunately, the Eurocentrist and hegemonic scholarship became a liability for any actual cohesion.
