Problems in Translating Gide's La Symphonie Pastorale

Abstract

In the long process of translating Andre Gide's La Symphonie Pastorale into American English, I encountered a number of difficulties. In this foreword I would like to give a short explanation of what they were, the stylistic or linguistic problems they presented and the manner in which I chose to deal with them. Also includes a biographical sketch of Gide.
