Pronunciation Problems in Second Language Learning: A Study in French and English
Abstract
In this study we will be looking at the problem of pronunciation
difficulties that arises when one undertakes the learning
of a second language. We will discuss some theories as to
why pronunciation problems exist what kind of problems they
are specifically, and how, through the use o1 articulatory and
acoustic phonetics, we are able to explain and pinpoint these
specific problems We will also take a look at the various
methods of teaching foreign languages and how these can be
used to facilitate pronunciation learning
In this paper I have chosen not to study intonation and
rhythm although they are very important factors of the spoken
language. Instead I limit myself to discussing and describing
articulations, how they differ from French to English and how
these affect the French speaker's pronunciation of the English
language.
As for the technical material in this study, references for
all charts and diagrams are indicated at the end of the
paragraphs in which they are discussed
