The Winter Feeder Survey (WFS) completed its 35th year in April 2012. Citizen scientists across the state of Michigan record the numbers and species of the birds observed at their feeders and submit monthly reports. These data are currently not widely available. We examined 4 years (1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010) and 6 species (Black-capped Chickadee, Carolina Wren, House Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Pileated Woodpecker, and Pine Siskin) and determined that WFS captures data similar to that of Project FeederWatch, a national (U.S. and Canada) project. Changes in the “backyard bird” community were also detected. The WFS data set is a rich source of information for researchers looking at Michigan’s avifauna.
