Abstract
This project arose from my passions in both business and circus arts. I became intrigued
about how to turn these passions into something that exists in our community in a way that had
not been done before. I desired to learn as much as I could about the arts management sector,
both in studying theory and gaining experience in the field. This thesis is a culmination of three
sections. The first section is a literature study of topics in arts management, arts
entrepreneurship, arts marketing, community partnerships, and arts financing.
The second section is a description of my learning through three field experiences. I led a
Starfish Circus camp session in Ocala, FL in summer 2010, participated in the American Youth
Circus Organization Educator's Conference and teacher training ·in Brattleboro, VT in fall 201 0,
and I interned with the Program Director at the PAL Sailor Circus in Sarasota, FL during winter
201 0. These three experiences gave me many examples of developmental circus models, which I
integrated into my own plan for a circus program in Kalamazoo.
The third section is a compilation of the knowledge gained, and its implementation to
create my own vision of a community circus model program here in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Circus in the 'Zoo is a fitness and creative expression pilot program that utilizes circus arts as the
medium for personal development and forming lifelong wellness habits for community members
of differing backgrounds and ages. The program acts as a service learning opportunity for
Kalamazoo College students, bridging gaps between the College and the community we live in.
