Economic and Demographic Changes Resulting From Trade Policy and Globalization Reform in Mexico and Mexico City From 1960-2002
Abstract
Through out its history, Mexico has undergone many reform changes that have
effected the organization and function of the country's major cities. This paper focuses on
Mexico City (Zona Metropolitana de Ia Ciudad de Mexico) the details of the economic,
social, and demographic changes as a result of trade policy and globalization reform.
This paper proposes that the economic policies enacted from 1960 to 2000 created
economic, social, and demographic changes within Mexico and Mexico City. The
development of this argument requires an analysis of the economy that Mexico developed
after the Mexican Revolution and the actions that ultimately led to this type of economy.
This analysis is followed by a report on the economic policies implemented in Mexico
between 1960 and 1980, and the economic effects on Mexico as a whole and Mexico City
specifically. An analysis of the economic theory of the policies implemented during this
period is addressed followed by an analysis of the economic policies enacted during the
1980s and their effects on the country and Mexico City. Finally, an analysis of the
demographic and social effects of the economic policies implemented from 1960 to 2000
and their relationship to globalization is addressed.
