Experiential Senior Individualized Project: The Importance of Marketing

As a bachelor of Health Sciences at Kalamazoo College, my primary focus for the past four years has been to learn the knowledge that would prepare me for medical school and a successful career in medicine. I have always had a deep interest in obtaining a complete, deep understanding of how things work. As such, I find that I have a passion for physiology in particular. Additionally, I have been intrigued by economics and business from the first time I had heard about the "invisible hand." Consequently, I chose to obtain a minor in Economics at Kalamazoo College in order to obtain the knowledge that I see as absolutely essential to surviving in the world; especially in today's struggling economic times. When an opportunity presented itself to me to obtain a summer position at a company called Stryker that sells medical supplies, I was elated. I interviewed for several positions, being bounced from one department to another. It didn't bother me that I was interviewing for over two months, because I just wanted to be involved. At the time, I felt that it offered me an invaluable experience to get some real-world insight into the realms of both the medical and business fields. I was eventually offered a position in marketing, with which I had previously had almost no experience. Nonetheless, I saw it as a chance to prove myself in the workplace and welcomed the challenge with open arms. Throughout the entirety of my summer experience at Stryker, I was able to apply the knowledge I had learned in the classroom relating to both health and business. I was able to get exposure to some information critical to the company's success, and participate in very meaningful project~ that helped Stryker improve the already impressive growth they have experienced since the beginning of their existence. In the experiential section of this paper; I will discuss the specifics of my position at Stryker and describe the wide range of work that I did, with the focal point concentrated on product marketing and an emphasis on product backorder management. In the connections essay; I will examine the importance of that work, and marketing in general, using various economic concepts that I found to be key components to the success of the company and my specific role. In doing so, I will present the conceptual knowledge learned in the classroom and describe its application to the real-world that makes a very successful business possible when marketing is implemented properly.
