    Abstract
I spent my SIP quarter (January-March 1991) in Washington, D.C. as a research intern for the Environmental and Natural Resources Policy Divi8sion of the Congressional Research Service. The divisions of the Congressional Research Service provide Congressional members and their staffs with information pertaining to legislation, i.e., just about anything, through responses to personal requests as well as through issue briefs and reports dealing with topics of general concern. As I did not bring a specific topic of interest to study, but rather a desire to become acquainted with basic present envi9ronmental thought and practice, my project - a directory of environmental and industrial interest groups that have been influential in the formation of recent public policy concerning the environment - was designed by a frequent request from Congressional members and staff, not by my own creativity. Researching the various organizations and their issues of interest, however, inspired me to formulate my ideas of our society's present relationship to the environment. The process of this reformulation composes the body of the work. A copy of the directory, included for reference and to give the folder a typical SIP weight, follows the text.
