Abstract
This paper is a research project examining new and creative approaches to arts funding. There has been very little written in this area, so most of this research is based upon interviews, proposals, case studies, and work plans of foundations, and nonprofit management firms. This paper looks at the new support systems for the arts developed from and as nonprofit organizations as well as the involvement of private, community and corporate foundations. It will look at new methods of ensuring long term viability for arts organizations. As opposed to traditional support for artistic programs this paper will look at the business of arts organization, and support that focuses on technical assistance, and management as a means of improving arts institutions. This type of support is becoming increasingly more popular as the trends in business and in the society are looking to maximize each dollar. This is true even in philanthropy. Grantmakers want to see results from their grant dollars, and many grantmakers believe that a way of maximizing their grant money is by providing technical support and teaching the organization how to become self sufficient They can then bring in more dollars either through increased donations through the development department or through earned income in increased sales of tickets. This training also teaches the organizations to use this money they receive wisely and efficiently by having set strategic long and short range plan. In conclusion, this paper will discuss how these grants benefit all parties involved and help to ensure that these arts institutions will be around for all to enjoy.
