In February 2009, Charles Blaich and Kathy Wise from the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts at Wabash College visited Kalamazoo College to conduct a “culture audit” of the institution as one of the initial activities for the College’s Teagle Foundation grant aimed at transforming Kalamazoo into a more vibrant learning community. Our goal was to develop a sense of the extent to which the Kalamazoo community currently values and engages in the assessment of student learning. We will return in four years, at the end of the grant, to see what impact the grant activities have had on Kalamazoo’s involvement in assessment work. During our visit, we met with various Kalamazoo faculty, administrators, staff, and students, and with members of the Kalamazoo Project Implementation Team (KPIT). Based on our conversations, we have identified five opportunities that the KPIT can use to support the successful implementation of the grant.
