Digital Satellite· System
Abstract
The following work is a detailed description of the Digital Satellite System (DSS).
DSS is the latest means of receiving television programming. By utilizing satellite and
digital technologies, DSS is capable of offering every consumer in America over 175
channels of television programming with laser disc quality video and CD quality sound.
Introduced in April of 1994, DSS is now used in more than 1.2 million homes nationwide.
Studying the DSS industry and the individual components which allow DSS to
function has been very insightful. It is difficult to say for certain what the future holds for
the DSS industry, but it would appear that this new industry will continue to grow at an
extremely rapid pace. Digital television programming provided by the DSS system is only
the beginning. In the not so distant future DSS will be capable of providing Internet
access and a number of other informational services. As DSS capabilities continue to
increase the demand for DSS will also increase. This new technology will soon be as
common as the VCR.
The work done during my nine weeks at USSB has been extremely educational
and interesting. The vast majority of this work was done in the USSB Marketing
Department A complete description of the USSB Marketing Department and the projects
I completed can be found in the ''Work Experience" section of this WESIP.
