Abstract
During the Fall of 1996, I completed an internship at S.K.Y. (Sakaiya)
Corporation in Webberville, Michigan. This was in partial fulfillment of the
requirements for a Work Experience Senior Individualized Project (WESIP) at
Kalamazoo College. What follows is an attempt at representing my experience at S.K.Y.
The first section presents some research into the effects of Japanese Automobile
Sector transplants. The bodies of primary research on which I based this first section
come to drastically different conclusions. So, rather than attempt to make sense of widely
different analyses and policy recommendations, I chose to view the effect of Japanese
transplants in terms of the response of the U.S. domestic automobile industry.
In the second section I produce some work representative of the projects on which
I worked during my time with S.K.Y. The first project involved comparing data from
other local employers. The second project was more inward looking; I created time
efficiency studies for on department in the factory.
The third section is an attempt to tie my WESIP with my academic course work
and long term career goals. As explained in the text, this is an exercise in futility. I
found no direct correlation with my course work, and am hesitant to think about long
term career goals.
This paper is by no means a culmination of my WESIP experience. There are so
many intangibles which are difficult, if not impossible, to work into a paper such as this.
Rather, it is a collection of pieces which I feel best, though not adequately, represent my
experiences.
