Abstract
The nationalistic reforms of the post-war period have not only affected the Argentina of that time but also the future of following generations. The restructuring during Juan Domingo Peron's presidency has led this country to support an inefficient
economic framework where the benefits and the powers were in the hands of selected interest groups. For that reason, it was politically impossible to reverse the effects of the nationalistic reforms for the following governments. It was not until 1989 that
the government attempted to re-create a competitive market structure. The collapse of some governmental institutions, hyperinflation, and a general feeling of chaos led Argentines to support a drastic change in the government and the economic
framework. President Carlos S. Menem, with the direct help of Domingo Cavallo, has transformed Argentina into a new country. This thesis attempts to explain how a country, which was considered one of most developed of the world at the beginning of
the century, declined after World War II. It describes the economic policies adopted at Peron's times and their consequences throughout the decades. Finally, I show how Argentina went through an economic reform and its immediate results.
