The Role of a Trustee
Abstract
To understand the role of the Trustees, one must first appreciate the legal
framework within which the College operates. The charter granted by the State
of Michigan in 1833 sets forth the basic authority and purposes of the College.
The College is also governed by many state and federal laws and regulations,
and its tax-exempt status and other conditions essential to its educational
mission depend upon compliance with these legal requirements. The Trustees
are officially accountable for the College’s adherence to its legal obligations.
