The purpose of this Senior Individualized Project is to first, describe the project as it stands; secondly, to explain the reasoning behind building the dam and investigate whether the dam will be able to fulfill the goals that has been set for it; thirdly, to consider the numerous controversial issues that the project raises, including technological, environmental, social (resettlement), archaeological, and safety issues; fourthly, to look at world trends in dam building and determine whether China is following or going against the flow of world opinion in building the dam; then, to investigate possible alternatives to the dam, the pros and cons of these alternatives, and to determine whether such alternatives have been seriously considered; and, finally, to ascertain the political climate surrounding the Three Gorges project and to discover what possible political motivations there may be for building the dam.
