dc.description.abstractThis study focused on the creation of a taper after considerable research into the best methods of tapering, followed by the implementation of the taper on a group of 42 swimmers ages 7 to 17 after a training period of 6 weeks. Several tests were implemented in order to examine the effectiveness of the taper. A standing jump test was used to measure leg power before and after taper, a heart rate test was used to measure heart rate levels following a series of sprints before and after taper, and pre and post taper times were compared to ascertain whether or not significant time drops were made. Results showed that the majority of the pre and post taper times were not statistically different, indicating that the taper was fairly ineffective. Further, when the pre and post taper times of 2002 were compared to those of 2001, it was found that there were more significant time drops in 200 I. Many factors may be responsible for the results of this study, such as the short nature of the season, the inconsistent attendance at practice, and the lack of coaching experience in the researcher.en_US
