The focus of my Senior Individualized Project is the psychological response to sports injury and rehabilitation. In recent years researchers have begun to conduct more in depth studies into the psychological side of sports injury. In the past, the focus of sports injury research had been on the physical aspects. Sports injury has been a large part of my life during my past three years at Kalamazoo College, and my experiences will be illustrated at the beginning of my paper. I will also discuss the subjects of self-identity and athletic-identity, as they have a great deal to do with the reason why athletes respond the way they do to sports injury. The many feelings that athletes experience after incurring a sports injury will be discussed as well. Since the rehabilitation process is an important part of recovery from sports injury, it will be another point of focus. I hope that this SIP will help its readers to understand the importance of psychological rehabilitation of sports injury as it has helped me.
