Tommy John Surgery and the Young Arm

The topic of Tommy John surgery has gained increasing media and public attention over the past few years. Much of the interest examines how the surgery has been successful for many Major League baseball players. With the success rates being so high for major league baseball players, a disturbing trend of younger athletes have shown increased interest in the procedure. The purpose of this paper is to examine every aspect of the procedure and look at some possible reasons as to why many young athletes have recently undergone this procedure. Studies discussing the success rate and age trends for the procedure were reviewed. The possible causes of arm trouble for young athletes and the response of Little League Baseball to these concerns are discussed.
