Abstract
Coming up on thirty-five years of legal implementation of equality in athletics, women and girls are still creating and shaping female sports. Participation in athletics continues to increase along with the demand for more venues for women and girls in the field. Women are sports broadcasters, own professional teams, and direct athletic associations and administer and coach at almost every level. Women in sports continue to grow and evolve almost at a daily rate. Commonly an underlining message, athletics are fantastic training arenas. Sports teach lessons that other activities may not. Teamwork, time management, determination, delayed gratification, goal setting, communication, passion and commitment are simply of a few traits instilled in participates and demanded of them as well. Sports are a perfect training ground for leadership skills. This can be seen both in the growth of individuals that are already leaders as well as the development of "new" leaders. Athletics are an unofficial venue for training young leaders. Girls and women in sports are "spreading their wings" in leadership roles on a variety of teams. Research on the leadership skills women develops within sports can only further female athletics. As the saying goes, "A woman's work is never done."
