Abstract
Discovered in the mid 1800's by D.D. Palmer, chiropractic care was jump started by his son, B.J. Palmer, in the early 1900's. It seems to have begun intertwined with spirituality. The discussion from the naysayers was the thought that these new methods resembled witchcraft because it involved the nervous system and energy surges that your body has but we could not see. There was little credibility in the early stages of Chiropractic care due to the medicines such as Penicillin in 1928, very few people trusted doctors who told them that by manually adjusting their spine and back they would feel healthier, have more energy, and be able to heal faster, increase blood flow, and overall increase their well-being. Since the days of leather helmet football, baggy pants in baseball and helmet-less hockey, athletes have been trying to gain the advantage on their opponents. Some means have been illegal but new types of exercises, nutrition, and sleep all have been in constant improvement in the field of science. The truth is athletes were missing one of the most important factors of reaching peak performance; and that is being properly aligned, allowing your nervous system to function appropriately. Dr. Michael Jones, a respected chiropractor and former athlete from Springfield, IL, asked a great question, "How many professional, collegiate and weekend warriors alike have been performing below their true potential because of existing asymptomatic subluxations but think they are at peak performance because they are well-trained, fit and without any symptoms or debilitating injury?" All types of athletes wanting to perform at their best could benefit from chiropractic care. Postural improvements can assist in better joint function as well as being in better cardiovascular shape. A decrease in joint pain and better range of motion in the joints and muscles as well as flexibility can be achieved. Athletes such as Lance Armstrong, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Stockton, and Tiki Barber exemplify the use of chiropractic care. These professional athletes, from a broad spectrum of sports, use this treatment to regain alignment of their bodies to minimize recovery time and maximize their nervous system functionality.
