Abstract
The Lansing Area AIDS network (LAAN) is one of several non-profit organizations in Michigan dedicated to serving the community through HIV and AIDS education and prevention, as well as serving those already afflicted with HIV or AIDS. As an intern under Patrick Lombardi, director of volunteer services at LAAN, I was able to participate in several of the network's programs over the course of a three-month summer internship. The programs ranged from peer education, to community education, to direct support. My two major projects included the AIDS Walk Michigan 2000 campaign as well as Life Ride 2000. Towards the end of the internship, I was certified through the Red Cross to instruct classes on basic HIV I AIDS education and prevention, as well as a separate certificate enabling me to instruct African American audiences. This allowed my internship to span a wide range of issues surrounding HIV and AIDS present in our communities today.
