dc.description.abstractHydrating properly and eating right are necessary for performing in sport. Proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and water are all essential for an athlete. Protein is important for muscle repair and contraction of muscles. Carbohydrates and lipids are both valuable sources of energy. Lipids are used during extended exercise and carbohydrates are the most efficient source of energy and are used as the primary energy source. Water and other fluids help to keep the body cool through sweat. Ionic components of water and fluid also aid in muscle contraction. The proper balance of protein, carbohydrate, lipid, and water depends on what sport is being performed. A tennis player should intake most energy in the form of carbohydrates to fuel high level workouts over short periods of time. A runner should consume mostly carbohydrates because they will be the most efficient source of energy with low amounts of oxygen present. A body builder should consume large amounts of protein to rebuild muscles and aid in power muscle contraction during weight lifting.en_US
