Cyber Job: Doing Business on the World Wide Web in Paris, France
Abstract
From September through December 1996, I worked for the French Internet
company Decouvertes. Decouvertes runs a large server, called France Way, which
contains several site hostings, cyber boutiques and tourist information about France. In
addition, Decouvertes offers Internet/Intranet consultation services to other companies.
After I was hired by Chef de projet Pierre Szymanski, my time was split between
Kalamazoo, Michigan and Paris, France, and my duties included Web page creation and
editing, translations, referencing, and marketing consultation.
This project, through both failures and successes, certainly taught me a great deal
about computers, the World Wide Web, and working in a tiny office with a small group of
underfunded, but dedicated Frenchmen. It has been a true adventure; unpredictable,
exciting and sometimes unsettling.
