Water Infiltration in Unsaturated Soils: A Comparison of Analytical and Numerical Solutions to Richards' Equation

We consider a mathematical model for a current problem in the fields of soil science and environmental engineering. We examine analytical and numerical solutions to Richards' equation, which describes the one-dimensional vertical flow of water into homogeneous, unsaturated soils. We look to a new analytical approach suggested by Holden, which predicts the velocity and the position of the propagating water front under ponded and rainfall boundary conditions. This method has not been compared to other analytical methods, numerical methods or experimental data. As such, we present a numerical model with which we verify the analytical solution.
