Abstract
This paper was written to be an overview of user interfaces over time, and to
express my educated guesses of where user interfaces are .going m the future. It starts
with a brief introduction into what a user interface is, and what makes one interface better
than another. Following the introduction, this paper covers the major methods of user
interface past and present. Because each user interface could become a paper of its own,
anyone trying to find specific information on any user .interface will be quite
disappointed. However, older user interfaces, as well as ShelVfext based interfaces and
Graphical User Interfaces (Gills) are discussed.
The latter part of the paper concerns itself with two popular computing options.
These are speech synthesis and interpretation, as well as Virtual Reality (VR).. ln this
part of the paper the two technologies are considered from a user interface perspective.
The conclusion of this paper is that these two technologies will gain importance as niche
technologies, mainly with the development of smaller and smaller computers, wearable
computers, and games developed to use these technologies, but will probably not be a
main method of interaction with computers. This is, with VR, as a result of
cumbersomeness, and with voice synthesis/recognition as a result of 1) the probability of
misinterpretation by the computer, and 2) because people are more dependent on their
eyes and sense of sight, than on their ears when dealing with their surroundings, and this
will probably carry through with their computers.
