A Monte Carlo simulation was created to determine the effectiveness of seven different control chart schemes that were being considered as solutions to the problems faced at the Romeo Engine Plant. It was quite obvious from the state of matters there that current Ford SPC system implemented as part of the real-time automatic data collection system was inadequate to handle the amount of data routinely collected, thus making appropriate corrections and management decisions on quality difficult to make. The push towards investigating the feasibility of EWMA charts was quite obvious from the literature available on the subject. Part of the problem though was the lack of information available on coupled X -bar and range charts and on the implications of real-time data collection on management's ability to respond and correct quality problems as they arise.
