Impossible Spaces and Rendering Algorithms
Abstract
The methods discovered in this project could lend themselves artistically in both digital
and live applications in visual media to create several interesting illusions. These illusions
can be used to simply create confusing spaces, or to use the assumptions of regularity to create the illusion of a change in size by use of context. The use of actual physical models
in film is often cheaper then digital effects, so its implementation could help produce special
effects in film at a lower cost or on a more limited budget where perhaps computer graphics
software is unavailable.
Future research could include looking at the nature of the scaling that must take place
for these gaps to remain hidden. :it was mentioned in this paper that scaling must occur,
however the exact nature of such scaling depends completely on the viewpoint. When viewed
from the correct direction far away very little scaling is necessary, from wider camera angles
more scaling is necessary. It could also include looking at using projective plane geometry
to describe the same phenomena.
