Mixed Modeling of the Leatherback Turtle Nest-Site Fidelity at Playa Grande, Costa Rica

Not much is known about the leatherback turtle's (Dermochelys coriacea) nesting behaviors, specifically, the degree of the leatherback turtle's philopatry (nest-site fidelity), which other sea turtles exhibit. Therefore, in order to further examine this behavior, I used a longitudinal data set of 1,466 turtles with 7,439 observations gathered over eight seasons from Playa Grande, Ecuador to determine if there was correlation between individual nest-sites over time. This involved determining fixed effects and random effects to construct a mixed model. The result of this model was statistically significant but small correlation between areas of beach from one nesting to the next of individual turtles, indicating slight nest-site fidelity.
