Abstract
Diabetes mellitus has become a problem worldwide in the past few decades. Already over one third of the population of the United States suffers from diabetes mellitus and the number of cases diagnosed is similar in other countries such as Canada and Australia. Poorly controlled diabetics are at a greater risk for several other health complications including complications dealing with oral health, particularly periodontal diseases. Several studies have shown the relationship between diabetes and periodontal diseases. In this paper I will review the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, touch on the responsibility of dental practitioners towards diabetic patients, and discuss some current and future research dealing with diabetes and oral health.
