Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) has been the subject of increased attention as the population ages, and thus reliable methods of managing the symptoms of OA are in demand. The disease results in the degradation of cartilage, typically in joints that withstand high impact or repetitive motion. Both traditional western medicine and complementary alternative medicine (CAM) have offered specific solutions in relieving pain and stiffness association with OA. Yet few researchers have addressed the potential benefits that could arise from integrating elements of both types of medicine into a single management strategy. This paper will examine the recent innovations in western medicine and CAM in the field of OA and discuss the viability of integration.
