This paper is an examination of Navajo culture, Western medicine, and the intersection of the two. A history of the Navajo people is given, as it provides the foundation for the Navajo belief system, which is then discussed. A brief explanation of today's Navajo society is followed the role of the traditional Navajo shaman. Basics of Western medicine are discussed before moving into a description of the Tuba City Indian Medical Center. The set-up of the system is explained, as well as specific examples given of the influences of Western medicine and traditional Navajo healing on the other. Finally, the integration of the two is considered, concluding with the author's personal conclusions.
