Abstract
The association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease has
recently been a growing issue worldwide. Periodontal disease, an oral disease that results
in infection and inflammation, and cardiovascular disease, a systemic disease that is
caused by infection and inflammation, have long been suggested to be associated with
each other, but there have previously been difficulties with gathering evidence to
demonstrate ah association. Epidemiological studies demonstrate that severe periodontal
disease is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, but the
mechanisms are rather unclear. However, recently there has been growing attention to
the concept that C-reactive protein, an inflammatory biomarker that elevates during
periods of infection and inflammation, has a direct role in the pathogenesis of
cardiovascular disease and that it could be the link that associates periodontal disease
with cardiovascular disease. There have been many proposed functions of C-reactive
protein that could suggest its role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, but the
concept is still new and further studies need to beĀ· conducted on C-reactive protein's
functions during periods of inflammation to validate C-reactive protein as a link between
periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease.
