Abstract
The demand for antibacterial products by both consumers and health care institutions has risen sharply over the past decade. Triclosan [5-chloro-2(2,4- dichlorophenoxy)phenol] is the antibacterial agent most commonly used in these types of products. This project investigates the effectiveness of triclosan in the form of a plastic polymer against eight common bacterial strains, which are present in institutions such as hospitals - a breeding ground for nosocomial infections. Using In vitro tests, the survival of these organisms was investigated over a fixed interval of time on treated and untreated hospital overbed table surfaces. This study shows that triclosan embedded plastic polymers are indeed effective in preventing the proliferation of most species of microorganisms.
