Abstract
Plasmid DNA from antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecalis strain V583 was purified from cultured bacteria for nucleotide sequence analysis. Reactions prepared for nucleotide sequence determinations were performed using the Pharmacia Automated Laser Fluorescence sequencer. The nucleotide sequence information was analyzed and compared with known functions within the GenBank. Matches to functions known to be involved in steps of bacterial physiology that represent traditional antibiotic target sites were given priority for further consideration. Exciting and illuminating discoveries and properties were identified that will provide a rich resource for designing experiments to probe the biology of this important pathogen.
