This research is concerned primarily with MMP-9, known also as Type IV collagenase or gelatinase B, a zinc-requiring protease of 92 kDa apparent molecular weight under reducing conditions, and 88 kDa under non-reducing conditions (Morodomi et aI., 1992). Secreted in an inactive, proenzyme form (zymogen), proMMP-9, like other MMPs, can be activated by serine proteinases. This cleavage produces an active form enzyme of 83 kDa with collagenolytic and gelatinolytic properties.
