In an attempt to help clarify the role of GLI in physiology, the study described in these pages was under-taken. Islets of Langerhans were isolated from rat pancreas and incubated in the presence of GLI in order to study the effects of GLI on the secretion of glucagon and insulin in vitro. A prediction was made prior to beginning the study that GLI would be similar in effect to pancreatic glucagon and cause a stimulation of insulin secretion. An extensive review of the literature has failed to find a report of this type of study.
