Abstract
Arterial pulse wave envelopes of a real time frequency analyzer and a zero crossing frequency detector were compared to see if the latter might prove to be a suitable substitute for the former in non-invasive peripheral vascular disease diagnosis. The real time frequency analyzer and zero crossing frequency detector were compared in two different areas: i) the actual shape of the envelope, accomplished by digitizing corresponding wave forms and superimposing the two different envelopes to each other, and ii) comparing transit times derived from theĀ· two analyzers for the femoral-tibial and popliteal-tibial arterial segments. The superimposition of the corresponding wave envelopes showed inconsistencies in the zero-crossing frequency detector (ZCFD) wave envelopes between normal and diseased states. Comparison of transit times for the leg segments revealed no valid correlation between the real time frequency analyzer and the ZCFD. The zero-crossing frequency detector was then used to identify the forward and reverse flow components for the real time frequency analyzers.
