Migrant Eligibility Requirements for Programs Offered by the Michigan Department of Social Services
The following journal records my day-to-day activities while working for the Manistee Department of Social Services. My official classification was Migrant Eligibility Examiner 06. Because a large number of the migrants were of Spanish origin and knew very little English, I had to be able to communicate effectively in Spanish with the clientele. A migrant eligibility examiner is responsible for the implementation of the various programs provided for the migrants. Among these are the Food Stamp program, Emergency Assistance program, Non-Resident Hospitalization program, and the General Assistance program. The examiner may also be asked to visit the various camps for different purposes because of his/her bilingual ability. Because of the nature of the job, the migrant staff in Manistee did not limit themselves to their job descriptions. If something needed to be done, whoever was available at that particular time would do it.
