A Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis Analysis of the Effects of Streptozotocin on the Pancreas, Spleen, and Thymus

The mechanism by which streptozotocin induces type 1 diabetes is not very clearly understood. Amidst the many hypothesized mechanisms are viral infection and autoagression. This study attempted to analyze the proteins affected by streptozotocin in the pancreatic tissue, spleen lymphocytes, and thymus lymphocytes by 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis. C57B1/KsJ mice were injected with 40 mg of streptozotocin per kg of body weight at intervals of 24 hours for up to 5 days. The pancreases, spleens, and thymuses were then collected and the proteins of these tissues were analyzed using a process of protein analysis called 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis. No consistent diabetic markers were found.
