In an effort to determine what role the profession of nursing will play in the future, the historjcal and present status of the occupation will be examined. Before 1854, nursing as we know it today did not exist. In time of war, the need for bed-side assistants was extraordinary. These 'nurses' came from military orders, Catholic and Anglican sisterhoods and the Deaconess movement which was initiated by the Fliedners at Kaiserwerth.
