Cardiodynamic Effects During Short Term Carbon Monoxide Exposure in the Rat

This paper provides a discussion of a study dealing with the cardiodynamic effects of short term carbon monoxide exposure in rats. It was the attempt of this study to quantify the initial cardiodynamic changes that occur, on an hourly basis. When rats are exposed to concentrations of carbon monoxide of 500ppm in air, theoretically, carbon monoxide would induce changes in the cardiovascular system and thus allow many cardiodynamic parameters to be measured and evaluated. However, the cardiac parameters changed very little and most of the ones that did changed in an inconsistent manner. It is postulated that at least three factors contributed to these results: 1.) the way the rat responded to the anesthetic; 2.) the shock to the rats system by surgically. opening the rats chest; 3.) the rat's circadian rhythm.
