dc.description.abstractIn an effort to determine the presence of a primary immune response defect in the diabetic Chinese hamster, 72 diabetic and 72 non-diabetic: animals were injected with sheep erythrocytes. Ahtibodies were assayed using the hemolysis reaction and 2-mercaptoeth-anol reduction. This allowed characterization of IgG and IgM class antibodies. Results showed that the diabetic Chinese hamsters showed lower total antibody levels throughout most of the first 16 days following antigen injection. Furthermore, the diabetic animals showed virtually no IgG production. It was concluded that the diabetics did, in fact, show an immunological defect in the primary response which may contribute to the etiology of acute diabetes.en_US
