Abstract
The present studies concern a new group of antibiotics produced by Streptomyces lincolnensis var. Linaolnensis .under conditions discussed later. The streptomycetes are gram-positive, filamentous bacteria which form an extensive network of mycelia. Spore formation occurs simply by cross wall formation in the filaments. StreptomYcetes usually inhabit soils and are rarely found in either fresh or salt waters. They can be grown on many carbon sources such as alcohols, sugars, amino acids and others. They are known to produce over 500 antibiotics of which 50 have valuable medical application.
