Abstract
The experiment is related to two of today's major problems. One problem is that in the United states today all males over the age of' twenty suffer from some degree atherosclerosis; women are affected slightly later. In all types and degrees of atherosclerosis there is a marked increase in the cholesterol level of the atherosclerotic tissue. This has led to a great amount of research on cholesterol biosynthesis, transportation, accumulation, and degradation. There is hope that control of the cholesterol level in man will lessen the risk of atherosclerosiso One means of limiting cholesterol levels would be by controlling its biosynthesis. In cholesterol biosynthesis the rate limiting step is the reduction of 𝛽-hydroxy-𝛽-methylgultaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CO A) into mevalonic acid(MVA). The reaction is catalyzed by 𝛽-hydroxy-𝛽-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HIvlG-Co A reductase). Since this would seem like the logical place to attempt control, it is the enzyme that I worked on.
