dc.description.abstractDiabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by the inadequate secretion an/or utilization of insulin.• Undoubtedly, many factors are involved in the onset, maintenance and aggravation of the diabetic condition .. Human adrenal and pituitary glands secrete numerous hormones, many of which are involved in the body's carbohydrate metabolism. These tissues and their products are important factors in metabolic homeostasis. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis makes it possible to visually survey the protein content of any tissue or body fluid sample. Approximate charge, size, relative amounts and staining properties of proteins can be discerned. My experiment involved the electrophoretic comparison of pituitary and adrenal gland tissues from diabetic, non-diabetic and pre-diabetic Chinese hamsters as models of the human system. A protein was found in both pre-diabetic and diabetic pituitary and adrenal gland tissues to be shifted toward the basic side of the gel when compared to the same tissue from a non-diabetic animal. This suggested the possibility of a genetic "marker" for diabetes. The protein in question was estimated to be approximately 27,000 daltons in molecular weight, and stained blue with silver stain. No protein variations unique to a particular tissue were found. This suggested that the visible proteins unique to each tissue were indeed normal in the diabetic Chinese hamster.en_US
